The Hijas de Maria de Guadalupe (Daughters of Our Lady of Guadalupe) is a “sorority” founded at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe by Very Rev. Esequiel Sanchez. Girls ages 13-18 and their mothers are invited to join the group as a way to dedicate their youth to a life of service, friendship, and spiritual growth.
The mission of the Hijas de Maria is to help young women in their spiritual, academic, and inter-relational human development. The group seeks to listen deeply to their needs and concerns as young women today in a space where they feel accepted and supported. The friendships and bonds formed among the girls are important and instrumental to their personal growth, but also the deepening of the relationship between mothers and daughters.
The Hijas de Maria, in conjunction with the mission of Dando la Mano, benefit from additional incentives that will help them to grow in integrity and explore their potential, including:
College scholarship programs for graduating members
Workshops on Latina Women’s empowerment
University field trips and other culturally enhancing experiences
Volunteer and community service projects
Since 2016, over 30 young girls and their mothers have joined the Hijas de Maria.
To join the Hijas de Maria (Daughters of Mary) candidates are asked to register and interview with a member of the steering committee. Once accepted, the candidates are invited to participate in group activities for three months after which they are to express, in written form, why they would like to become a member. Membership is free and there is no obligation to either parent or child.
